The rest of the day was exhausting. Abby hadn’t slept more than a few hours the night before, and by lunchtime she was tempted to curl up under the circulation desk in search of some much-needed rest. She downed a soda and ran across the street to a coffee shop that served lunch sandwiches, then spent the rest of her break texting Nathan and Gabrielle.

Nathan was obviously worried about her after their call the night before. He kept sending her funny memes and links to uplifting articles, while she tried to reassure him that she was fine.

Nathan: yeah sorry not buyin it. after last night the only way you’d be fine is if you had your memory erased.

Abby: really, memory jokes from you?

Nathan: yep, but i’m the only one allowed to make them, don’t forget it.

Abby: you’re terrible

Nathan: terribly hilarious

Abby rolled her eyes at the phone. Nathan’s amnesia was something they could smile about now, but she’d met him right as he was recovering—both from the accident and from the aftermath of telling Jason what he’d remembered.

Abby: I am okay though. promise. And I texted gabrielle this morning to ask her out on a date on my terms.

Nathan: good. do something that you’re comfortable with. maybe a more relaxing date will help her open up with you!

But that was the problem. Now that Gabrielle had accepted her invitation, she had to come up with an actual place for them to go.

So she texted Gabrielle: Is there a play you want to see that you haven’t yet?

Gabrielle responded almost immediately with a list of plays and musicals that Abby recognized. A quick search online told her that most of them were sold out, and she couldn’t afford tickets to any of the ones that weren’t.

Well, that idea was out.

Then she had to set her phone aside and get back to work.

Still, the day was starting to look up. She hadn’t been fired, and she had a date.

Then Marcy called her back for a second meeting and passed her an envelope, and the day went from okay to far worse.

“This is a joke, right?” she asked a minute later, clutching the letter in tight in one fist.

Marcy looked even more drawn, bags beneath her eyes. “I wish it was.”

“I pretty much live paycheck to paycheck as it is,” Abby pointed out. She took a deep breath; this wasn’t Marcy’s fault, and her boss was just as upset as she was, but still. “Cutting my hours back and cutting wages?”

“After meeting with everyone, I spent the rest of the morning trying to balance the budget. Even with the three staff members that I’ve had to let go, we weren’t going to make it. The budget they’ve given us to work with is only one step above no budget at all,” Marcy said. “You’re not the only one getting a pay cut.”

Abby took the letter and her bad mood back to her desk, where she was joined a while later by Brian, in an equally foul mood.
